How to Assign Handicap Strokes on a Scorecard
Assignment of (Handicap) Strokes
Where To Apply Strokes
If handicap strokes are applied to a gross score, subtract the player's handicap strokes (usually the Course Handicap) recorded on the scorecard. The result is the player's net score.
In a competition where the handicap strokes must be assigned to the appropriate holes (ex.a one net best ball) the scorecard must show the handicap strokes on the proper holes.
Handicap strokes are assigned based on your handicap and then assigned starting with the lowest numbered handicap hole (hardest hole) until you have used all your handicap strokes. In the event you have more than an 18 handicap for the course you are playing, you then will add the additional handicap strokes over 18 starting again with the lowest handicap hole. If you are 19 handicap you will have 1 hole that you will get 2 handicap strokes. If hole 3 is the lowest numbered handicap hole (hardest hole), you will get 2 handicap strokes on that hole and 1 stroke for every other hole on the scorecard. If you are a 22, you will get 4 more handicap strokes over the 18, so on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th lowest numbered handicap holes (hardest holes) you will get 2 handicap strokes not one and so on based on your handicap.
The men's handicap stroke holes may not be the same as the women's handicap stroke holes. Usually the women's handicap stroke holes are listed on the bottom of the scorecard and the men's will be on the top of the scorecard, it is titled handicap on the scorecard.
See Scorecard below as an example with the golfer being a 19 handicap
